Montreal, September 21 – The Quebec Association for Equity and Inclusion in Post-Secondary Education (AQEIPS) wishes to express its disapproval of the Quebec Government’s decision to overturn the recent decision of the Administrative Tribunal of Quebec, which recognized that Article 120.1 of the Quebec Pension Plan Act renders the penalty of the Quebec Pension Plan inapplicable for people with disabilities.
The Quebec Government’s decision to challenge a measure aimed at ensuring equity for people with disabilities is deeply concerning. It contributes to perpetuating the economic inequalities faced by people with disabilities in Quebec by denying them access to necessary financial resources to meet their needs. This affects our members, students with disabilities, because it impacts the future of those aged 65 and under and the current situation of those over that age.
AQEIPS believes that these penalties go against the fundamental principles of equity and non-discrimination. People with disabilities face challenges and additional expenses to meet their specific needs. Imposing financial penalties on these vulnerable individuals at a crucial time in their lives is not only unjust but also prevents them from enjoying a dignified retirement.
We urge the Quebec Government to reconsider its position. It is imperative that people with disabilities benefit from their disability pension without facing reductions when it transforms into a retirement pension at the age of 65.
