{"id":6928,"date":"2025-07-16T15:41:39","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T19:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/?p=6928"},"modified":"2025-07-21T13:39:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T17:39:01","slug":"acfas-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/en\/acfas-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"AQEIPS at the 92nd Acfas Conference : For a culture conducive to student mental health in higher education\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-2\">\r\n\t\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On May 5 and 6, 2025, the Quebec Association for Equity and Inclusion in Post-Secondary Education (AQEIPS) had the privilege of participating in the 637 symposium &#8211; Pour une culture favorable \u00e0 la sant\u00e9 mentale \u00e9tudiante en enseignement sup\u00e9rieur :&nbsp;<em>miser sur le d\u00e9veloppement et la mobilisation des connaissances avec les personnes \u00e9tudiantes<\/em>&nbsp;(For a culture conducive to student mental health in higher education: building on the development and mobilization of knowledge with students), held as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/evenements\/congres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">92nd Acfas Conference<\/a> at the \u00c9cole de technologie sup\u00e9rieure (\u00c9TS) in Montreal. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The symposium, proposed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/osmees.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Observatoire sur la sant\u00e9 mentale \u00e9tudiante en enseignement sup\u00e9rieur (OSM\u00c9ES)<\/a> et <a href=\"https:\/\/ismequebec.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">l\u2019Initiative sur la sant\u00e9 mentale \u00e9tudiante (ISM\u00c9)<\/a>, aimed to mobilize research to better support educational institutions and students in implementing concrete mental health actions. Bringing together researchers, practitioners and partners, the event featured presentations, panels and collective reflection around a central question: <em>how can mental health research better support students and educational institutions in implementing actions to promote student mental health?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Promoting inclusion in research and the mental health of students with disabilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It was in this context that AQEIPS, in collaboration with Yves-Marie Lefebvre, a master&#8217;s student in urban studies at ESG, presented a paper entitled <em>Favoriser l&#8217;inclusion en recherche et la sant\u00e9 mentale des personnes \u00e9tudiantes en situation de handicap<\/em> (Promoting inclusion in research and the mental health of students with disabilities), aimed at reflecting on ways of enabling the concerned students with disabilities to participate fully in university research. It highlighted :&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">the systemic barriers encountered by students with disabilities in academic environments ;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">the concrete strategies they deploy to meet these challenges ;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">and the promising inclusive practices already in place in some institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div style=\"height:2em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Throughout the symposium, a number of presentations also addressed diversity through issues that are too often under-documented, such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">support for students with disabilities;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">inclusive substance use education practices;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">transitions to internship settings;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">and the stigma experienced by queer and neurodivergent students.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">**To learn more about the various topics covered, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/archives\/evenements\/congres\/activites\/89024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">please consult the complete program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025_ACFAS-1800x1200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6822\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025_ACFAS-1800x1200.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025_ACFAS-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025_ACFAS-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025_ACFAS-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025_ACFAS-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Photo: Maude Chartier-Desjardins, research project manager at AQEIPS and doctoral student at UQAM, and Yves-Marie Lefebvre, master&#8217;s student at ESG, presented a paper entitled <em>Promoting inclusion in research and the mental health of students with disabilities<\/em> at the 92nd ACFAS conference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A desire for change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Throughout the various events associated with the conference, our team was delighted by the mobilization of people from diverse backgrounds and their allies in the fight for their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This was particularly the case at the 615 symposium &#8211; <em>La communication accessible : une responsabilit\u00e9 partag\u00e9e<\/em> (Accessible communication: a shared responsibility), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/archives\/evenements\/congres\/activites\/88494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whose full program is available here<\/a>, which brought together enriching and critical perspectives on the production of knowledge. A number of presentations testified to the forms of audism and ableism still prevalent in research, while proposing necessary practices: the presence of concerned co-researchers, adaptation of dissemination formats, recognition of invisible work and implementation of concrete accessibility measures (subtitling, accompaniment, and more!).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Whether we&#8217;re talking about people who are deaf, aphasic, autistic or living with other communication disorders, the presentations at both symposia converged on the same conclusion: <strong>placing experiential knowledge at the heart of research dynamics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Such a stance calls for a rethinking of the ethical, material and symbolic conditions of research, to make it more accessible and ensure that it ceases to reproduce discriminatory power relations. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">To learn more about the conclusion of this fine event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/medias\/communique\/faire-battre-coeur-science-bilan-du-92e-congres-acfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">please consult the 92nd Acfas Conference Report here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2em\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-medium-font-size\"><em>The AQEIPS team sincerely thanks the various teams involved in bringing this major event to fruition, and salutes the boldness of the presenters who are committed to accessibility and inclusion.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On May 5 and 6, 2025, the Quebec Association for Equity and Inclusion in Post-Secondary Education (AQEIPS) had the privilege of participating in the 637 symposium -
