While it may seem obvious to some, for others there\u2019s still work to be done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-md-font-size\">What does the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms say?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Article 1 of the Charter invokes \u201cpersonal security, inviolability and freedom\u201d, while Article 4 asserts the right to dignity. <strong>You have the right to feel respected, and to live and study in safe environments.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Article 10 aims for equality for all, without distinction. It implies a right to academic, professional and social accessibility. Article 16 protects you against discrimination in employment and training. <strong>You have the right to access education, jobs and social opportunities without being discriminated against.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Article 15 protects you against discrimination in accessing transportation and public spaces. Article 44 targets the right to information. <strong>You have the right to access information and public spaces.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8.png\" alt=\"Did you know ? \n24 % of canadians with disabilities face obstacles when trying to access federal information, services or support online. \n50 % of canadians with disabilities face obstacles that limit their ability to move freely around public buildings and spaces.\" class=\"wp-image-5412 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8.png 1080w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-md-font-size\">Access to education for all: a right, without exceptions\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every post-secondary institution must have the <strong>necessary infrastructure<\/strong> to allow students with disabilities to thrive in their educational pursuits. This includes accessible buildings, trained staff and <strong>accommodation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centers for support and services aim to foster an inclusive learning environment, by offering <strong>reasonable accommodation<\/strong>. And all this, with respect for equality, without discrimination or privilege.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/10.png\" alt=\"Quiz \nReasonable accommodation consists in: \nAnswer A: Making special exceptions for people with disabilities. \nAnswer B: Changing a rule or a practice to avoid discrimination. \nAnswer C: Treating everybody the same to give them equal chances. \" class=\"wp-image-5414 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/10.png 1080w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/10-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/10-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/10-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-md-font-size\">What is reasonable accommodation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdpdj.qc.ca\/fr\/vos-droits\/qu-est-ce-que\/laccommodement-raisonnable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDPDJ<\/a>, \u201cReasonable accommodation is a means used to put an end to any situation of discrimination based on disability, religion, age or any other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdpdj.qc.ca\/en\/your-obligations\/prohibited-grounds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ground prohibited by the Charter<\/a>. Accommodating a person may involve <strong>adapting a practice, or a general operating rule or granting an exemption<\/strong> to a person in facing discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are differents types of accommodation. Here is the list offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/education\/support-students\/students-disabilities-transitioning-secondary-school-college\/getting-started-college-students-disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gouvernement du Qu\u00e9bec,<\/a> which shows examples of reasonable accomodation that can be offered by academic institutions:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-add2400a39f317e6b667e27fca407dcb\">Tutoring; Extra time for examinations ; Use of a computer and adapted software ; Access to adapted or quiet rooms during exams ; Modified schedule ; Note-taking services ; Physical guidance and help with handling objects ; Production of educational materials in Braille or alternative formats ; Interpretation into sign language or subtitling ; Loan of specialized equipment or use of adapted technologies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What if I need something that isn\u2019t on the list? Am I being unreasonable?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No! Of course, having specific needs is not unreasonable. If you aren\u2019t sure that you\u2019re able to access a specific type of accommodation, the best thing to do is ask. You can reach out to the <a href=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/resources\/academic-life\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">center for support and services at your school<\/a>. They will be able to tell you which accommodation is already offered, and whether it\u2019s possible to set up other accommodation, depending on the resources available.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-md-font-size\">Equity and inclusion require ongoing collective work\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyday we must take a step forward taking us closer to the respect of the rights of all individuals, including students with disabilities \u2013 and you have a say in this! <strong>Nobody knows your situation better than you do.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At AQEIPS, we support you in the promotion and defense of your rights, so that you can fully thrive in your academic life, without compromising on equity and inclusion.
