This special day also invites us to think about the ways that those ideals have found their way into today\u2019s practices for equity and inclusion in the context of education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to highlight the hard work of former teachers who were sent to combat, and their expertise and willpower in the face of the devastation of World War I that have led to remarkable changes in pedagogy as we know it.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2025_11_11_Souvenir_5.png\" alt=\"In the traumatic post-war era, former teachers entirely rethought their relationship with education. \nThis movement, known as Education Nouvelle in France, or alternative pedagogy in Quebec, imagined education as a way to prevent more wars by teaching future generations notions of peace, cooperation and mutual understanding.\" class=\"wp-image-5103 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2025_11_11_Souvenir_5.png 1080w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2025_11_11_Souvenir_5-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2025_11_11_Souvenir_5-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2025_11_11_Souvenir_5-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4e1cc20359e8683ef83387bf0e5b779d\">Post-war hardships&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Many teachers returned from combat with deep physical and psychological scars, which affected their teaching methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-3bd97d0ab477d5ee86e6698bc93b35c0\">-&gt; Loss of voice, respiratory issues and limited movements are trauma symptoms shared by many World War I veterans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These hardships encouraged the need to reflect on pedagogy and the necessity to rethink accessibility in educational institutions, taking into account both the physical and psychological needs of the students and of the teachers themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-gray-lighter-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:15% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/aqeips.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/1-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5084 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-834eb9a27845e6a84115f86f512d488d\">Listen (FR)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiofrance.fr\/franceculture\/podcasts\/la-fabrique-de-l-histoire\/guerres-et-education-nouvelle-7599063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guerres et \u00e9ducation nouvelle : \u00e9pisode 3\/4 du podcast Une histoire des p\u00e9dagogies nouvelles | France Culture<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a99542bc1d0c004be75ba8d54805b955\">A new model of education emerges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-29cbdbcfbfa236ffaa55bfe9608afab5\">-&gt; Making room for movement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some teachers implemented open classrooms, allowing for a better flow, and organized the space so as to make it easier for all to move around. In cases where the architecture did not allow for such adaptations, they at times would move their class outside, where students and teachers alike could move as they wished and include their natural surroundings in their learning journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-f17e8595f484016cbe5fa770ebe28e18\">-&gt; Living and learning together<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Group activities, such as community gardening, were not only practical exercises but also powerful tools for learning to respect the experiences and contributions of each individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-c405b7dca8a6654d5da3486b37f8913f\">-&gt;
